On the first anniversary of his departure from the White House, former President Thomas Jefferson wrote to the governor of New Hampshire about the malfunctions of inherited political power. Comparing royalty to pampered livestock that has been overfed and had all of its whims and passions indulged for generations, he noted the end result is leadership that soon becomes "all body and no mind."
