IT is not what President Barack Obama said at the UN General Assembly that matters; it is the horror of the situation in the Middle East that must prod the Muslim world into asking itself -- to borrow the title of historian Bernard Lewis's celebrated book -- what went wrong? The American leader's focus in his speech on Wednesday was on a joint struggle that would "degrade and destroy" the self-styled Islamic State, which he called a "network of death" that was using rape as a weapon to subdue civilians, beheading journalists and killing children. Forty nations, Muslim and non-Muslim, were fighting this menace, whose reprehensible actions, he said, "no God condones."
