Afghanistan was never an easy country to leave

It was one of the longest continual stints I spent with the mujahideen during their decade of resistance against the Red Army in the 1980s. Exhausted and desperate to get out, I recall asking the commander of the group - who later became the governor of Herat Province - when he could arrange to smuggle me back over the border into Pakistan from where I could begin my journey home.
